Bloomberg Businessweek is seeking a freelance visualization reporter to work with its Businessweek Graphics team in New York City or Washington, D.C. In this role you’ll collaborate with editors, reporters and art directors to create data visualizations for the monthly print publication and for daily Businessweek-branded content published on Bloomberg.com.
The charts, maps and visual narratives you develop will share the same thoughtful reporting, insightful perspective and sophisticated design that are the hallmarks of Businessweek.
We value people who are passionate about covering the issues that are most important to our readers–business, economics, technology, politics, and markets–and motivated to work on a variety of content, from features to breaking news. You’ll have opportunities to pitch your own ideas for graphics and to collaborate with other members of the Bloomberg Graphics team to execute them. We welcome applicants with a range of skills that enable them to create clear and compelling visualizations, though experience with In-Design is preferred. In-office work four days / week is required.
We’ll trust you to:
Rely on your exceptional curiosity, data prowess and design sensibilities to create informative maps, charts and other graphics
Work efficiently on a wide range of graphics under a variety of deadlines
Possess interest in topics core to Bloomberg News coverage — including finance, markets, economics and government policy, among others — and an eagerness to develop subject-matter expertise in these areas
You’ll need:
Strong sense of visual design, layout, typography and user experience and familiarity with design software such as Adobe Illustrator and Figma
Experience reporting on varied deadlines and crafting visual narratives with data
Experience with data reporting, e.g. the ability to source, collect, manage, munge, explore and analyse data from various sources and formats using R, Python or other programmatic methods
Experience with Adobe Indesign is encouraged
Experience with cartography software such as QGIS and/or mapshaper is encouraged
Experience with front-end web development using modern HTML, CSS and JavaScript and rendering graphics in the browser
If you think you'd be a good fit to join us, submit an application and include a resume, a brief letter telling us about yourself and a portfolio that demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of data visualization, graphic design and development. Include a link to your Github account if you have one.
