Department Background

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.

The Cornell Biological Field Station is an internationally renowned center for fisheries and aquatic research located on the shore of Oneida Lake and includes a small, protected harbor for research boats and has a number of laboratory, housing, storage, and maintenance buildings. The purpose of the position is to provide support in order for CBFS to perform its intended mission of excellence in research, teaching and outreach in environmental science, fisheries, and ecology.

Position Summary

This is a full-time position at the Cornell Biological Field Station at Shackelton Point, Oneida Lake. Conducts fisheries assessment in order to generate annual estimates of abundance of important sport fishes on Oneida Lake, New York. Sampling is conducted with various fishing gear including trawls, gillnets, seines, trap-nets, and electrofishing. Some sampling is conducted at night. Laboratory analysis includes age and growth, diet and other tasks associated with specific projects. Maintains electronic files of fisheries data, conducts preliminary analyses of data, and provides summaries to principal investigators. Participates in development of reports to funding agency and contributes to preparation of articles for the technical literature. Some interactions with the public and agency personnel.

Maintain a safe working environment to ensure that all protocols and procedures adhere to safety requirements.

Adhere to safety protocols and procedures. Direction and training are provided by the Cornell Office of Occupational & Environmental Health in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences.

Maintain professionalism when interacting with anglers at all times

One-year appointment from March 17 2025 to March 16 2026 with possibility for extensions.

Required Qualifications

  • Formal training beyond a HS Diploma of 1 year to 2 years, Associate’s degree, 2 years of college coursework or equivalent; more than 6 months and less than 1 year experience.
  • Boat operation skills and knowledge of boating safety requirements.
  • Must take pride in daily work and be comfortable with multitasking.
  • Must have the ability to interact with public; ability to read situations and act accordingly and respectfully.
  • Work well with a diverse group in a professional and respectful work environment.
  • Must be capable of performing the physically demanding functions associated with this position
  • Knowledge of fish biology, fish sampling and fisheries management
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel and social media
  • Must have and maintain and valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license and be cleared to drive for Cornell University business operations.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.S. degree or at least two years of experience in the natural resources field.
  • Coursework in fisheries and human dimensions of natural resource management preferred.
  • Boater safety certification and basic knowledge of small motor maintenance and repair preferred.
  • Experience with basic statistical analyses.
  • Ability to operate electronic equipment such as depth finders, GPS, hydroacoustic, video
  • Knowledge of net repair
  • Experience aging fish with scales and otoliths
