About Shopify

Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. We propel entrepreneurs and enterprises to scale the heights of their potential. Since 2006, we’ve grown to over 8,300 employees and generated over $1 trillion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries.

This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.

About you

Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.

Before you apply, consider if you can:
  • Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
  • Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
  • Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
  • Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
  • Bring critical thought and opinion
  • Embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
  • Work digital-first for your daily work

About the role

As Shopify continues to expand and grow throughout the US and globally, and tax laws continue to change, we are looking to add a State Tax Manager that will help support Shopify’s Tax Team in critical tax compliance and planning functions.

The right person for this role will be highly skilled and experienced in US state and local taxation, detail-oriented, excited to lean in and learn, and be highly adaptable. Our mandate is varied and constantly evolving, and as such we need folks who thrive in ambiguity and genuinely enjoy solving complex problems. This is an opportunity to contribute your skills to a world-class team and help us build for the long term. This role will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with state and local tax filings, minimizing tax risks and liabilities, and identifying tax-saving opportunities.

  • Oversee all US state and local income tax filings and other relevant tax returns (preparation of tax returns are outsourced).

  • Develop and implement strategies, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable US state and local income tax laws and regulations.

  • Manage all controversy with US state and local tax authorities including relationships with auditors to ensure effective communication and resolution of tax-related matters.

  • Responsible for the review of state and local income tax provision for US GAAP financial reporting.

  • Conduct tax due diligence reviews and assessments for mergers, acquisitions, and other business transactions, including identifying potential US state and local tax risks, liabilities, and opportunities to ensure informed decision-making and compliance.

  • Provide guidance and support to internal stakeholders on state and local tax matters, including tax planning, structuring transactions, and resolving tax issues.

  • Conduct research and analysis of state and local income tax laws, regulations, and rulings to stay updated on changes and developments that may impact the organization.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Finance, Legal, and Product teams, to ensure proper tax treatment and reporting of state and local tax matters.

  • Identify tax-saving opportunities and implement strategies to minimize state and local tax liabilities while maintaining compliance with applicable laws.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent

  • Minimum 6 years previous experience in state and local tax compliance, planning, and consulting, preferably in a managerial or supervisory role

  • In-depth knowledge of US state and local tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex tax regulations and apply them to practical situations

  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office and G suite applications

  • Ability to work independently as well collaboratively in a team environment

  • Flexible and adaptable nature, willing to go the extra mile to avoid mistakes

  • High attention to detail in a fast paced environment is key in this role

  • An interest in conducting tax research and digging deep to find answers and solutions to complex problems

  • CPA in progress or recent completion of CPA preferred
