Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. Qualifications

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of technical engineering experience in telecommunications infrastructure such as copper, cable plants, and fiber optics.
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience in Telecommunication design
    • OR Master's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience in Telecommunication design
    • OR Doctorate degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • 6+ years of large-scale facility networking infrastructure projects within datacenters or other comparable experience (healthcare, enterprise, large retail, critical environments, healthcare, government etc.)
  • Knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards including BICSI Standards, TDMM, ANSI/IEEE/IEC, NFPA, NEC, and building codes.
  • Technical understanding of mission critical environments and the associated telecommunications facility considerations.
  • Ability to lead multiple projects of varying timelines while managing project expectations.
  • Detailed understanding for structured cabling components.
  • Familiarity with high-level construction administration.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Effective written and verbal communications skills.
  • Experience using MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel including effective reporting/presentations of project information.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or 8 years in Telecommunications design experience
  • Chartered or Professional Engineer or equivalent per country of residence.
  • BICSI RCDD, DCDC or CDCDP.
  • Familiarity with ground-up construction, greenfield and brownfield site development requirements.
  • Action-oriented with a passion for getting things done quickly, efficiently, and effectively.
  • Ability to balance varying responsibilities that span rhythm of business, communications, executive management, and culture.
  • Prior experience with Visio.
  • Experience with using Revu Bluebeam
  • Expertise with AutoCAD, and 3D BIM programs such as AutoCAD or Revit.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be able to effectively and efficiently drive the design of all aspects of the physical networking infrastructure and address any design-related issues that arise during construction for all Microsoft co-location facilities.

The successful candidate will work with internal stakeholders on standards, Microsoft requirements, materials as specified; lead design workgroups and drive cross-functional meetings for multiple concurrent projects. This individual will be tasked to manage issues, decisions and risks, drive initiatives to improve efficiency and quality to scale with the growth of Microsoft.

The successful candidate shall be responsible for all aspects of the telecom-related designs within a geographical region, be able to multitask and quickly react to challenges with a proactive, lessons learned approach. The Telecoms Engineer is required to manage our external Architect and Engineer’s (AE) design creation, while also independently creating design deliverables as required for separate workstreams while quality checking peer workload as needed.

Design and Design Oversight:

The successful candidate will design, or assist with the design of, physical networking infrastructure for Microsoft co-location facilities, addressing any issues during construction. They will assess existing facilities to ensure compliance with Microsoft standards. The role involves collaborating with partners, leading design work groups, and conducting cross-functional meetings for multiple projects.

  • Provide technical support on physical network refresh and rebuilds including cable plant, pathways, and translating telecommunication requirements to other disciplines.
  • Address existing condition investigations, communicate risk to relevant partners, and create telecommunication scope of work to retrofit existing facilities to latest Microsoft standards.
  • Collaborate with internal and external customers and partners, utilizing tools and proper documentation for all team members to fully understand their role within the project. This collaboration aims to create or oversee the creation of datacenter telecommunications designs from an integrated Scope of Services and Basis of Design (BoD) to Issue for Construction (IFC). The successful Candidate will also collaboratively manage the Construction Administration phase of the datacenter until handover for new Lease DC project buildouts, special projects, and network upgrades with other discipline leads.
  • Partner directly with cross organizational teams such as engineering design teams, delivery teams, operations teams, contractors and suppliers.
  • Provide guidance to staff augmentation A/Es and A/E Consultants.
  • Organize and oversee concurrent projects while maintaining focus under pressure.
  • Apply structured thinking and logic with strong analytical skills.
  • Maintain strong customer service focus, with the ability to communicate with highly technical management teams.
  • Employ a creative approach to problem solving and ability to think out of the box.
  • Provide remote site support for construction teams.
  • Attend site visits to review all stages of the construction and ensure quality is being maintained.
