The Linux Systems Group (LSG) is building the Linux based technologies at Microsoft, and we are looking for a talented Software Engineer to join our team in IDC. LSG would love to hear from you if you are interested in working on Linux and open source projects, including building and maintaining the Linux kernel that powers Azure’s Linux based infrastructure.

Qualifications

Qualifications
  • BS/MS in computer science or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience in triaging, debugging, and fixing Linux kernel issues discovered in test and production environments
  • Linux kernel performance tuning
  • Knowledge of Linux kernel debugging tools, such as crash, drgn, and/or modern tracing tools is desired
  • A history of contributing to the Linux kernel or other open-source projects

Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding and hands on experience with the Linux kernel and its core functionality like memory management, process scheduling, networking, storage, file system, etc
  • Passionate about quality and engineering excellence throughout the full Dev, Test, and Support cycle
  • Knowledge in Python and one of the modern programming languages like Rust will be a boost
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Interest in measuring/improving Linux kernel performance, including I/O characteristics, memory usage patterns, automate the rebasing process using AI or other tools, etc.
  • Knowledge of RPM-based packaging
  • Technical passion, terrific problem-solving skills, and self-motivated.

Our team plays a key leadership role in Azure by driving Linux and open-source technologies, solutions, and strategy. In this role, you will work closely with internal and external customers, building and maintaining different kernels and partner with independent teams in disparate geographic locations. You will work with upstream open-source projects, representing Microsoft as a strong community partner and contributor.
