Overview

Postdoc in “Economics and Computation” or related areas in the Economics and Computation Group at Microsoft Research. Locations open for consideration: the New England and New York City labs.

The Economics and Computation Group at Microsoft Research is seeking qualified postdoctoral researchers to join us in advancing the state-of-the-art in this interdisciplinary field. If your research background is in economics and computation, algorithmic game theory, or a related field, we would love to hear from you!

Microsoft Research offers an exhilarating and supportive environment for cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research, both theoretical and applied, with access to an extraordinary diversity of big and small data sources, an open publications policy, and close links to top academic institutions around the world. We seek applicants with the passion and ability to craft and pursue an independent research program, including a strong publication record at top research venues.

Postdoctoral researchers are hired for a one or two-year fixed-term appointment and receive a competitive salary/benefits package and eligible for relocation expenses. Positions in economics and computation require the completion of a Ph.D. in computer science, economics, or a closely related field before starting at Microsoft Research. We also welcome interdisciplinary applications from candidates with interest in economics and computer science but also strong backgrounds in other fields.

Our respective projects and publications can be found by following links from our group page. We collaborate extensively with the other groups at our labs (Machine Learning and Statistics, Machine Learning and AI, Sociotechnical Systems, FATE), and with other groups across Microsoft Research.

To be assured of full consideration, all your materials, including reference letters, need to be received by December 15. Applications received after that date may or may not be considered.

This role is not to exceed two years.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD completed (or close to completion) in computer science, electrical engineering, statistics, mathematics, economics, or a related field.
  • One or more publications or publicly available working papers directly related to economics and computation.

Other Requirements:

To ensure we receive a complete application from you, PLEASE BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Upload your CV with your application.
  • When prompted in your application, please provide the names and contact information of at least 3 referees. In nearly all cases one will be from your dissertation advisor; others may be from any other senior collaborators.
  • Upload (as separate attachments to your application) 2 conference or journal articles, book chapters, or equivalent writing samples that you are most proud of and which best demonstrate your expertise.
  • Upload (as an attachment to your application) one research statement (approximately 3 or 4 pages) that outlines both your research achievements and agenda.

To get started with your application, press the “Apply now” button above. When prompted, provide names and contact information of your references. Upload your cover letter, research statement and the two writing samples as separate attachments. Remember to press the “Submit” button at the last screen.

After you submit your application, the system will send a request for letters to your list of referees on your behalf. Note: The application system will not request reference letters until after you have submitted your application. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance so that they will be ready to submit your letter. While you will not be able to view the letters themselves, you can check the status of individual reference requests within your application.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a field that is complementary to economics and computation, such as algorithmic game theory, market design, applied microeconomics, and other related fields.
