Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the <CHSE> team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 7 years of hands-on experience in the design and development of AC/DC, DC/DC, and DC/AC switch-mode power supplies (SMPS).
  • Proven expertise in mid- and low-voltage power distribution systems for data center infrastructure.
  • Deep understanding of SMPS architecture, topologies, and design methodologies
  • Knowledge in state-of-the-art power factor correction (PFC) techniques, in-rack power supply unit (PSU) design, and magnetic component optimization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with extensive experience in lab-based validation and debugging.
  • Solid working knowledge of EMI/EMC compliance and global safety standards (e.g., IEC, UL, EN).

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Responsibilities

As a Principal Power Hardware Engineer , you will be the technical voice focusing on design efforts specific to power infrastructure across Azure within Microsoft. You will be leading System level design and development , for AI and non AI systems, influencing architecture , engineering, and validation for our product s to deliver high quality solutions to the customers. You will also be responsible to develop and deploy solutions that enable reliable end to end delivery . This is an opportunity to work on next generation architecture and provide innovative solution to customers.

  • Design and implement advanced electrical systems and energy management solutions for hyperscale and enterprise data centers.
  • Lead power system architecture and design including power distribution, UPS, switchgear, in-rack AC/DC, and DC/DC power solutions and integration with renewable sources and battery storage.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, industry partners, product managers, and cross-functional engineering teams to define system requirements and specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE, UL) and support certification processes.
  • Perform simulations, modeling, and validation of power and control systems using tools like MATLAB/Simulink, ETAP, or PSCAD.
  • Perform simulations, modeling, and validation of AC/DC, DC/DC, DC/AC SMPS converters using tools such as SIMPLIS, SPICE, PSIM, and PLECS
  • Support project execution from concept through production, including technical documentation and troubleshooting.
  • Support PDU's, UPS's, Power conditioners, Circuit Breakers, Bus Bars, Battery Backup, ATS's in all stages of development
  • Support creation of product specifications
  • Support testing/test planning of all solutions in all stages of development.
