Overview

The Azure High Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) product team drives the hardware roadmap, software, and services that enable our users and partners to run technical computing workloads in Azure - HPC simulations, AI & machine learning, remote visualization, and immersive gaming experiences. We are responsible for providing Azure customers and partners with supercomputer-class capabilities to accelerate their research, drive competitive differentiation, and finding answers to some of the most difficult questions of science, industry, and entertainment.


As a Principal Technical Program Architect for Exascale Archive you will be providing thought leadership to drive the evolution of our storage and archive solutions and have a direct impact on Microsoft’s cloud offerings as well as our broader platform strategy. You will lead customer-facing engagements and projects focused on cloud-native storage and archive scenarios with our most strategic customers and most cutting edge technologies. You will provide technical ownership and oversight, gathering feedback, use cases and requirements for projects spanning multiple engineering teams and disciplines.

To be successful in this challenging position, you will need exceptional cross-group leadership, collaboration, strategic thinking, technical know-how and customer skills. You must possess excellent communication and presentation skills as well as the ability to effectively interface with employees and partners at all levels. As a thought leader and technical expert, you will also need to have a deep understanding of the strategies and offerings of key competitors. This role is fully remote. Travel will be 10-20% and the role requires the ability to work with clients both in-person at customer sites for extended periods, and remotely.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline or field
    • AND experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development
    • OR equivalent experience
  • Proven experience in designing, building and managing highly performant large-scale data storage and archive solutions (archive media, object storage, databases, modern data platform solutions), preferably with a mix of engineering and customer facing experience.
  • Domain in-depth expertise in at least 4 of the following areas: 1) Technical Product Management; 2) Data Storage; 3) Data Archive; 4) Database/Data Warehouse; 5) Modern Cloud Data Platforms & e.g. Azure Data Lake, Databricks, Cosmos DB, Azure Synapse; 6) ELT/ETL Solutions (e.g. Apache Airflow, Azure Data Factory); 7) Data Governance.
  • Experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.

Other Qualifications:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
    • The successful candidate must have or be able to obtain the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance as issued by the United Kingdom Security Vetting Unit (UKSV).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Masters' Degree with a AND experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience with scientific data sets such as earth science observational data e.g. netcdf, zarr and experience with AI/ML Data Science Platforms (e.g. Azure ML, MLFlow), AI/ML workflows and data storage requirements.
  • Software development (e.g. .NET, Python, Java, Kubernetes/Distributed Systems) and devops experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrable experience in writing technical documentation, papers, presentations and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • You will drive the roadmap and execution of scalable, cloud-native exascale archive solutions and customer engagements. You will be expected to demonstrate domain and industry expertise, technical depth, continuous learning and an ability to translate business objectives and challenges into solutions.
  • You will guide and coach engineering teams to design technical solutions, validating use cases and priorities using supporting data and metrics. You will also lead the teams in identifying risks and proposing mitigations.
  • You will guide teams to deliver on feature roadmap, track project schedules, develop staging and prototype implementation, and help teams lead governance programs. Work with our key customers and partners to plan and prioritize what is important for our team and our organization.
  • You will drive continuous improvement and new innovations using your industry expertise and customer relationships. Bring a user-first and disruptive mindset to archive workflows, driving intuitive UI/UX experiences for data discovery and retrieval;.
  • Drive insights from customer and partner engagements to influence future product releases.You will help product owners understand and prioritize feedback for the improvement of products and services based on the customer projects you will be delivering.
  • Represent your work, present technical challenges, solutions, and guidance to diverse audiences and stakeholders including senior customer technical and business decision makers, executives, conference attendees, and internal engineering leadership.
