Microsoft’s Threat Protection Research Group is seeking a Principal Applied Scientist to apply their deep knowledge of machine learning and AI to detect attacks on Azure. This person should have a deep understanding and practical experience with the latest advancements in AI, understand modern cloud computing architectures, and be able to oversee the creation of data-driven solutions in a large-scale, operational organization supporting millions of customers. Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience building solutions using LLMs.
  • 3+ years of experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years experience creating publications (e.g., patents, libraries, peer-reviewed academic papers).
  • 2+ years experience presenting at conferences or other events in the outside research/industry community as an invited speaker.
  • 5+ years experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings).
  • 3+ years experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team
  • Experience with PySpark and tools such as Azure Synapse Analytics, Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, or similar


Applied Sciences IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Partner closely with security researchers, other applied scientists, and engineering teams to develop a data driven strategy for detecting attacks against Azure infrastructure
  • Perform exploratory data analysis on massive data sets generated from telemetry
  • Perform experiments to determine the most effective approaches to detect attacks, including application of supervised, unsupervised, and anomaly detection machine learning techniques
  • Train and deploy machine learning models to production environments to support detecting new attacks on Azure
  • Implement machine learning pipelines for continuous retraining and evaluation of model performance
  • Participate and take a leading role in planning how we should measure the most pressing threats to the Azure environment and guiding others in the creation and improvement of these metrics.
