Overview

Microsoft Search Relevance team is at the forefront of the core copilot experiences across Microsoft products including Copilot Chat and Search accelerating productivity to help users find the right information in their organization.


As a Principal Applied Science Manager in the Microsoft Search Relevance team, you are responsible for managing and building a high performant team who is pushing & delivering on multiple mission critical work to build a foundation of innovation to improve search quality significantly. Some high-level examples include adapting the state-of-the-art vector search algorithm to an enterprise domain, improving keyword search quality, incorporating language understanding for search, and training/evaluating relevance models, and more. This will involve coordinating and aligning with platform partners, other science teams, and product across time zones.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of people management experience.
  • 7+ years experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.

Other Requirements:


Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 12+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of people management experience in applied science team.
  • 5+ years experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.
Applied Sciences M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $163,000 - $296,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $220,800 - $331,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • You will drive projects from design through conception, implementation, experimentation and finally shipping to our users. This requires deep diving into Copilot Chat and Search to identify gaps, coming up with possible solutions.
  • You will manage applied scientists, assigning tasks, closely mentoring or guiding them, taking responsibility for their outcome / growth & overall output.
  • You will leverage your network and personal expertise to attract new research talent to join Microsoft. You’ll identify cutting-edge solutions for products, create new application areas as needed, and recruit new headcount for these areas.
  • You will document work in processes and provide leadership for team members with documentation processes used. You will come up with innovative methods to address customer pain points in Copilot Chat and Search at scale, while pursuing scientific rigor. You’ll advocate for research and product groups and drive discussions around ethics and privacy.
  • You will review business and product requirements, incorporate research, and provide strategic direction for problem solving.
  • You will collaborate with platform partners, other science teams and product owners to across time zones, creating alignment in the partnership and unblocking the team.
