Overview

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the CHSE (Cloud Hardware Systems Engineering) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

We are looking for a Principal Power Hardware Engineer to join the team.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of working experience in datacenter and xPU power delivery design/architecture
  • 7+ years of experience designing multi-phase buck/buck-boost regulators, digital PWM controllers, bus converters, LDOs, PMICs, charge pumps, ADCs & DACs

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening reqirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or preferred qualifications

  • Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.
  • knowledge of high frequency magnetics design for power electronics
  • Excellent knowledge of control theory, closed loop compensation, stability analysis, phase margin, etc
  • Working knowledge of 2D/2.5D EM simulation tools such as Sigrity’s PowerDC, PowerSI, SiWave or equivalent
  • Vast experience designing printed circuit boards using schematic captures and layout tools such as Cadence
  • Ability to work with multiple cross functional teams to make the right trade-offs on system level performance.
  • Analytical and laboratory skills
  • Working knowledge of EMI and Safety standards.

Hardware Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Lead system-level design and development for both AI and non-AI systems.
  • Serve as the technical voice for power infrastructure design across Azure at Microsoft.
  • Influence architecture, engineering, and validation processes to ensure high-quality product delivery.

  • Develop and deploy solutions enabling reliable end-to-end power delivery.

  • Architect and design advanced xPU power conversion/delivery systems for applications including AI/ML, general-purpose data center computing, and storage.

  • Analyze and compare design solutions to guide optimal power system architecture.

  • Collaborate with suppliers, industry partners, product managers, and cross-functional engineering teams to define system requirements and specifications.

  • Perform simulations, modeling, and validation of power systems using SIMPLIS and SPICE tools.

  • Support projects from concept through production, including documentation and issue resolution.

  • Assist in the creation of detailed product specifications.

  • Support testing and test planning throughout all development stages.
