Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL Database are world-class relational database systems widely used across the globe on everything from small devices and servers to some of the largest cloud deployments in the world. The amount of data being generated in the world is soaring. With this dramatic growth, the importance of the data platform continues to grow tremendously. Customers need rich data services that provide deep insights from data. All of this must be done while supporting high availability, predictability and elasticity; Supporting 100s terabytes of data; ability to both scale up and scale out; supporting 1000’s of users on a single machine or a complex SQL query that utilizes 1000’s of cores. This is an opportunity to work in a diverse and collaborative team on extremely challenging technical problems. The challenges span the entire stack of database technology - programming language, query processing, storage & distributed systems. We incorporate the latest academic research and leverage the benefits of modern hardware advancements with a goal of supporting some of the largest databases on the planet and bring record-breaking query performance capabilities and ease of management to them.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s/Master’s/PhD with work or research experience in computer science or related field.

• 8+ years of programming experience in C/C++

Preferred Qualifications:

• Sound problem-solving skills with strong system sensibilities

• Proficient in C++, C#, Java or other high-level languages.

• Good understanding of database system internals, query processing, storage systems.

• Experience in building and shipping production grade software or services.

• High enthusiasm, integrity, results-orientation, self-motivation, and resourcefulness.

• Work collaboratively, solve problems with groups, find win/win solutions, celebrate successes.

• Solve problems by always leading with deep passion and empathy for customers.

As a principal engineer in the Intelligent Query Processing and Hyperscale team in Azure SQL Database, you will provide technical leadership on projects that use the latest technology in compute and storage, apply innovative algorithms for solving database, computing and storage problems at scale and high performance.
