Accepted startup members receive access to Newlab’s community and can add-on services including dedicated office space and product realization services.

Newlab is seeking an Assistant for our Production Realization team in Brooklyn, which is focused on bringing hardware products into the world. This person will report to the Director of Product Realization and work with other Product Realization staff to assist in the day to day operations of the prototyping shops serving Newlab members. This person is passionate about supporting innovation, always learning new fabrication skills and techniques, and is committed to creating shop spaces where all members feel invited and empowered to leverage the tools available to them.

This is a part-time in person position. $20-35/per hour

Responsibilities

  • Support staff and community in Product Realization at Newlab Brooklyn. Expected work schedule will be 4 Days a week. 9-5 each Working Day, Schedule can be determined by employee and Product Realization team
  • Assist PR staff with systems maintenance and safety checks on a day to day basis and improve these systems as necessary.
    • Cleaning and maintaining equipment across the facilities including:
      • 3D printing
      • Laser cutting
      • Woodshop
      • CNC Equipment
      • Metalshop
      • Casting
      • Finishing
  • Learn and perform basic operation of equipment in the facilities
  • Enforce safety rules and PPE requirements
  • Support the shop user community with advice, answers, and technical suggestions.
  • Maintain awareness of members' use of the space. Build relationships with the shop user community to know what is happening in the shop spaces
Required Qualifications And Skills

  • Minimum 2 years experience in a relevant shop environment
  • Experience in at least one of the following fields: Digital fabrication, metal fabrication, wood fabrication, robotics
  • Experience in physical prototyping, digital design, design for manufacturing, or other production related processes
  • Desire to learn fabrication techniques and new equipment
  • Desire to learn machine maintenance and troubleshooting

Nice to haves

  • Familiarity with spaces that support physical prototyping, research, and innovation.
  • Experience with the operations of shared-equipment and machine training programs.
  • Interested in expanding skills and experience beyond their designated area of expertise.
  • Engineering or design experience
