As a Backend Engineer, you’ll be part of a collaborative, high-impact team working to create scalable, reliable systems behind some of the most intuitive tools on the web. Whether you’ve been in the industry for three years or twenty, if you’re passionate about solving complex problems and delivering thoughtful, elegant solutions — we want to hear from you. This is a hybrid role working from our NYC office 3 days per week. You will report the Engineering Team Manager.

We’re hiring across several impactful product teams. Based on your experience and interests, you could join one of the following:

• Website Foundations: Power the core of Squarespace’s CMS — from high-performance APIs and efficient caching layers to evolving our monolithic codebase. This team owns the platform our website builder runs on — the crown jewel of Squarespace.
• Pricing + Merchandising: Help shape how we align customer value with pricing. This team ensures people can confidently choose the plans that fit their goals, using data and experimentation to guide decision-making.
• Checkouts + Payments: Redesign how customers subscribe to Squarespace — from choosing the right plan to checking out with their preferred payment method. This team focuses on creating flexible, transparent purchasing experiences.
• Corporate Applications: Act as internal consultants, crafting custom solutions for departments like Marketing, Legal, and Security. From modern web apps to high-volume event pipelines, this team builds the tools that help Squarespace grow from the inside.

You'll Get To…

• Build and maintain scalable backend services in Java and related technologies.
• Write clean, efficient code that powers high-traffic, production-ready systems.
• Contribute to design decisions and architectural discussions.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, designers, and product managers.
• Drive features from concept through implementation to launch.

Who We're Looking For

• 7+ years of professional experience in backend development using Java, Python, C, or similar languages
• Experience building large-scale, distributed systems
• Strong computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and system design
• Comfortable working in collaborative environments where feedback is valued
• A degree in Computer Science — or equivalent industry experience that speaks for itself

Cash Compensation Range: $128,500 - $231,500 USD

The base salary for this position will vary based on job-related criteria including relevant skills, experience, and location, among other factors.

In addition to the cash compensation above (which includes base salary and, where applicable for eligible roles, may include on-target commissions or overtime pay), Squarespace employees are eligible to be granted an option to purchase our common stock.
