We are seeking an Free-Space Optical Communication System Engineer to enhance our free-space optical communication systems within Stealth's Pensacola Photonics Division. Our division is at the forefront of designing, developing, and manufacturing sophisticated communication systems for internal space and broadband operations. Our work primarily focuses on Optical Inter-Satellite Links (OISL), space-to-terrestrial communications, and terrestrial links that facilitate connections across air, land, and sea platforms.

This position requires security clearance and is based onsite in Pensacola, FL.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct system architecture and design analysis for end-to-end optical communication systems.
  • Perform system performance modeling, simulation, and model validation.
  • Undertake channel modeling, simulation, and analysis, with a focus on atmospheric turbulence impairment.
  • Drive technology development efforts, including system studies, testbed development, and technology testing for next-generation free-space optical communication systems.
  • Support the definition and documentation of system architecture and requirements at both the system and subsystem levels.
  • Assist in the flow-down of system level and subsystem level requirements and their documentation.
  • Facilitate system level and subsystem level testing, encompassing laboratory tests, field tests, and operational/on-orbit tests.
  • Provide technical marketing support, including delivering customer briefings, drafting proposals, and authoring white papers.
  • Capable of independent work and collaboration within a diverse and multidisciplinary team, including scientists, engineers, business professionals, and ex-military personnel.

Qualifications

  • Must possess an active, transferable TS/SCI CI Poly U.S. government-issued security clearance before starting.
  • A Master’s degree in an Engineering, Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in Laser Communications Systems Engineering.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the systems engineering of free-space laser communication systems.
  • Direct experience in program management including planning, monitoring and control, financial oversight, contract management, and risk mitigation.
  • Proven track record in the successful design and development of optical and laser communication systems for either terrestrial or satellite applications.
  • Experience with the development and deployment of flight optical payloads.
  • Proficient in conducting complex systems-level analysis.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, with the capability to develop innovative solutions to advanced engineering challenges.
  • A solid foundation in the principles of optical and communication systems, capable of understanding and deriving specifications from first principles.
