Applied Scientist II
Uber
About the Role
This role is for the Brand Marketing Science team as an Applied Scientist. In this role, you will bridge the gap between complex data science and global business strategy, providing the measurement and optimization frameworks necessary to scale the Uber brand worldwide.
You will collaborate within a cross-functional team—partnering with Marketing, Research, Media, and Creative teams—to transform data into actionable strategic insights. This is an opportunity to shape the future of how Uber communicates with its audience.
Problems We Are Solving
- Long-Term Quantification: How do we accurately isolate and quantify the multi-year impact of brand-building efforts on business health?
- Difficult-to-Measure Spaces: How can we apply scientific rigor to "black box" marketing channels like influencers, podcasts, and linear TV?
- Geospatial Media Impact: What is the true incremental lift of high-visibility media (e.g., billboards, airport takeovers) across varying suburban and urban contexts?
Ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in experimentation, econometrics, and inference with the business acumen to align scientific roadmaps with top-tier priorities.
What the Candidate Will Need / Bonus Points
---- What the Candidate Will Do ----
- Develop and apply statistical and causal inference models to estimate the impact of marketing across various channels, markets, and test designs.
- Design custom tests and analyze results from complex experiments, including multi-cell, market-level (geo-testing), and longitudinal designs.
- Contribute to foundational modeling efforts, such as hierarchical smoothing, aggregation across disparate tests, and developing robust methods for handling low-signal or sparse data.
- Work closely with media, research, and marketing teams to develop actionable customer insights and inform campaign improvements throughout the course of the lifecycle by identifying optimization opportunities for creative and media teams.
- Design measurement frameworks for "hard-to-measure" spaces, developing scientific proxies for channels like influencers, podcasts, and linear TV.
- Evaluate and validate third-party measurement vendors, ensuring their methodologies (e.g., natural, simulated, or forced exposure) meet Uber's internal standards for statistical rigor and representativeness.
---- Basic Qualifications ----
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a quantitative field such as Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- 2+ years of experience applying statistical and causal inference methods to real-world data in an applied setting.
- Strong foundation in statistical modeling, hypothesis testing, and experimental design, including A/B testing and synthetic control methods.
- Hands-on experience designing, analyzing, and interpreting experiments, including evaluation of uncertainty, limitations, and tradeoffs.
- Proficiency in Python or R and SQL
- Ability to clearly communicate analytical insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders and collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional, fast-moving environments.
- Curiosity and learning mindset, with demonstrated ability to ramp quickly on new domains, tools, or methodologies.
---- Preferred Qualifications ----
- Bachelor's, Master’s or PhD in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Physics), or equivalent applied industry experience.
- Experience with advanced statistical or modeling techniques such as hierarchical / multi-level models, time-series analysis, or meta-analysis.
- Experience with incrementality testing, geo-experiments, or marketing measurement use cases (e.g., attribution, MMM, or related frameworks).
- Familiarity with marketing investment concepts such as elasticity, budget allocation, or cross-channel tradeoffs.
- Ability to independently drive scoped projects end-to-end with guidance, and operate effectively in ambiguous or evolving problem spaces.
For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$161,000 per year - USD$179,000 per year.
