About The Opportunity

As Wonder continues its transformative journey and prepares for its next phase of growth as it works toward an Initial Public Offering (IPO), we are building a best-in-class tax function. We are seeking a highly skilled and strategic Director, Indirect Tax to join our team. Reporting to the VP of Tax, you will ensure our indirect tax processes are scalable, technologically advanced, and ready for the complexities of a high-growth environment. You will leverage advanced technologies including generative AI and will act as a critical business partner to Finance, Product and Engineering teams.

The Impact You Will Make

  • Strategic Leadership and Operations

    • End-to-End Ownership: Own Wonder’s indirect tax processes, providing expert guidance on approaches for scalable tax calculation and remittance for Sales & Use Tax.

    • IPO Readiness: Design, implement and maintain a strong internal control environment aligned with established frameworks (e.g., SOX) to support our transition to a public company.

    • Financial Reporting: Optimize monthly accruals and reconciliations, develop processes to assess tax contingencies in accordance with ASC 450, ensuring proper accrual or disclosure in financial statements.

  • Tax Technology and Automation

    • System Ownership: Service as the functional lead for optimization of sales and use tax calculation and system integrations (Vertex, Netsuite, Zip and homegrown systems)

    • Demonstrating an AI-forward mindset, identifying and implementing new technologies to automate and streamline tax reporting and data collection across sales and use tax and business personal property tax.

    • Planning and Optimization: Leverage data to identify and implement tax planning opportunities that will drive cash savings and optimize tax expense.

    • Data & Analytics: Proficient in SQL for independent tax analysis and data extraction; leverage BI tools (e.g., Redash, Tableau) to create dashboards that monitor liability exposure and develop reports for audits.

  • Cross-Functional Partnership

    • Systems Implementation: Partner with Finance and Engineering teams to scope and deliver tax requirements to support new system implementations, including ERP enhancements.

    • Business Advisory: Assessing the tax implications of new business initiatives, products, and partnerships, providing proactive guidance to business leaders.

    • M&A Integration: Seamlessly Integrate newly acquired businesses into our technical infrastructure to support ongoing tax needs.

    • Culture of Curiosity: Instill a mindset of intellectual curiosity within the team—encouraging proactive discovery of new technologies that drive smarter decisions and outcomes.

What You Bring to the Table

  • Experience: 10-12+ years of progressive experience in U.S. indirect tax. Experience at a publicly traded company in food delivery, restaurant or retail industry is a plus.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or related analytical field. CPA, JD or Master’s degree or equivalent advanced credentials is preferred.

  • Technical & Analytical Skills:

    • Advanced skills in improving item categorization and calculation and taxability mapping (experience with LLMs for item categorization is a significant plus).

    • Data Literacy: ability to write and execute SQL queries to manipulate large datasets for tax reporting and audit readiness.

    • Proven experience implementing and managing sales tax engines and integrating them with ERP systems (Vertex and NetSuite experience a plus).

    • Experience implementing a procurement company/lease company structure for goods not for resale a plus

  • Public Company Standards: Proven experience with ASC 450 reporting and implementing SOX controls within a tax department.

  • Leadership & Influence: Executive presence and ability to influence senior leadership through data-driven storytelling. High emotional intelligence and a people-first leadership style.

Our hybrid model requires 3 days a week in the office. That said, many team members choose to come in more often to take advantage of in-person collaboration and connection. You're welcome—and encouraged—to be in the office up to 5 days a week if it works for you.

New York: $210,000 - $220,500 per year.

Illinois: $189,000 - $198,500 per year.

Wonder uses geographic-specific salary structures, which means the salary offered may vary depending on where the job is located. The final salary offer will take into account various factors, such as the candidate's skills, education, training, credentials, and experience.
